A push message is a best effort signal

Mobile push notifications can be delayed, dropped, or disabled by the user. An application should not make a notification the only record of a critical event. Keep the underlying message or task in the server's data model, then use push to invite the device to fetch current state.

For an order update, store the order event first. A job can attempt delivery to registered devices, but the app's inbox or order page remains the source of truth.

Model devices and consent

Store device tokens with user, platform, last seen time, and notification preferences. Tokens can rotate; update them when the platform returns a new value and remove invalid tokens after provider feedback. A logout should disassociate the device from the former account.

Ask for permission in context, after explaining the value. Respect category preferences and quiet hours where relevant. Never put sensitive personal details into a lock screen notification without considering who can see the device.

Queue delivery

Dispatch a job with the event ID and intended audience, then resolve current recipient permissions when it runs. This avoids sending an old notification to someone whose access was revoked after the event was created. Use an idempotency key to avoid repeated messages when the job retries.

Provider acceptance means the provider accepted a request; it is not proof that the user saw it. Record that distinction in support tools and analytics.

Deep links and fallback

The notification can carry a safe resource identifier and route hint. On tap, the app authenticates, checks current access, and fetches fresh data. If the resource was removed or permission changed, show a clear fallback screen instead of a broken route.

For essential communication, use an approved secondary channel such as email or an in-app inbox according to user consent and business rules.

Test delivery behavior

Test invalid tokens, multiple devices, logout, permission disabled, expired access, delayed delivery, and duplicate provider responses. Verify the notification job cannot expose another tenant's event in its payload.

Conclusion

Push is a delivery channel around a durable event. Design for delays and failures, keep payloads minimal, and check authorization at open time. Our mobile app development service covers this integration.
